NFL returns to Anaheim (sort of) as Eagles take over Angels’ yard

Left tackle Taylor Lewan suffered a back injury and did not return to Sunday’s game. He will have a MRI on Monday. He called it tightness and a back spasm that began when he woke up Sunday morning. He does not believe it will be something that affects him long-term.

Tom Brady was intercepted twice by Xavien Howard and held without a third-down conversion Monday night, and Miami snapped the New England Patriots’ eight-game winning streak with a surprising 27-20 victory.

The Dolphins (6-7) were 11-point underdogs at home, but they kept the Patriots (10-3) from clinching their ninth consecutive AFC East title — at least for another week.

“It was a bad night,” Brady said. “We’ve had a lot of good nights this year. This was a bad night.”

Brady went 24 for 43 for 233 yards and one touchdown. Miami sacked him twice and hit him five times, and held the Patriots to 25 yards rushing. New England was 0 for 11 on third down.

Ironically, there are as many quarterbacks with mobility in their tool bag trying to recover from this injury now than there were in the preceding decade.

Besides Wentz, there is the Texans’ Deshaun Watson, who returned for Clemson’s 2015 season opener after tearing an ACL the first time late in 2014. There’s the Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill, who hurt his late last season and re-injured it during this season’s training camp.

Thus, the sample size will grow next year if all recover and come back to the field next season. Wentz and the rest will begin to show if they’re the next McNabb or the next RGIII.

Shortly before that, Zuccarello saved a goal on the other end of the ice as the Devils came within inches of tying the score. Brian Gibbons’ shot got through Lundqvist but Zuccarello was able to swipe the puck out of the crease before it rolled across the goal line.ny_rangers_002

The joy after the Bulls’ latest victory was palpable because of the anguish the season has already caused.

The Mirotic-Portis drama caused actual pain in a season in which the Bulls dropped 20 of their first 23 games. The success the Bulls have had since Mirotic’s return has provided a sliver of hope in a slog of tanking this proud franchise hasn’t experienced in years.

Marshall and Colorado State have never played, but the programs have some recent shared history. Both programs were in the mix for the Power Five conferences’ automatic berth into a New Year’s Six bowl game in 2014, but dropped games to close the regular season.

In 2017, Colorado State plays with a style similar to that of Holliday’s 2014 Marshall bunch, which finished third in the nation in scoring. The Rams average 501 yards of total offense per game, No. 10 in the nation, and score at a 33.8-points per game clip.

NDSU, which won five-straight titles before losing to eventual champion James Madison in the semifinals last year, piled up 261 yards on the ground and 464 yards of total offense. While the Bison were seven yards shy of their season average on the ground, they held the Terriers (10-3) to 134, 120 below their average.

Wofford ended up with eight first downs and 177 yards, going 1 of 12 on third down.

On Oct. 18, Jurich was fired by a 10-3 vote of the trustees. His termination letter, delivered by Postel, was a two-page screed. Jurich had created “a culture of tolerance,” Postel wrote, entered into secret transactions “for your own financial or other benefit” and engaged in “willful misconduct demonstrated through ineffective management, divisive leadership, unprofessional conduct, and a lack of collegiality best characterized as intimidation and bullying that extends from student government to the University’s senior leadership. This has caused substantial damage to the University.”

Jurich, in the aftermath, seems like a man who feels bewildered and betrayed, as if he were fired for doing his job too well.

Aqib Talib, Michael Crabtree each suspended one game for fight

The two will have three days to appeal their suspensions. If they stand, which is likely, Crabtree will miss games against the Giants and Chiefs. Talib will be out for contests against the Dolphins and Jets. Both will be eligible to return to the active roster on Dec. 11.

Now, anybody who has watched the Browns on film will tell you they have talent on both sides of the ball. They are inconsistent and make really dumb mistakes at crucial times, but they do have the kind of guys on offense who can make your odd big play.

It was also Corey Coleman’s first game back from a Week 2 wrist injury, and the former first rounder, who ended up being the Browns’ leading receiver on the day, has speed to burn. Rookie tight end David Njoku is a big, strong guy who can get up the field in a hurry and jump up over people to make catches. Kizer, for all of the bad decisions he has made this season — and there have been many — has also made some absolutely beautiful throws.

“I feel really motivated right now, but I’ve always been motivated,” Okafor said. “This is the first time where people are against me in a sense because I’ve always been the hyped-up guy. It’s something new for me to experience, so I’m glad that I am experiencing it.”

The father of New York Giants quarterback Geno Smith says he received a death threat last week before his son started Sunday in Oakland in place of Eli Manning.

The call came Tuesday, Geno Smith Jr. told NJ Advance Media, a little more than an hour after it was announced that his son would replace longtime Giants starter Manning.

“I was just at work,” Smith Jr. told the website. “I answered, and he was like, ‘Geno?’ So I just listened, and he was like, ‘Is this Geno?’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’ He was like, ‘Your son better not start or we’re going to kill you.’ I kind of just laughed and then he hung up.”

SMU’s Courtland Sutton could be first WR drafted in 2018, NFL GM says

Having built on tremendous production over the past two seasons with a solid junior year, SMU wide receiver Courtland Sutton could be on the rise when it comes to his 2018 NFL Draft stock.

Finally, I can probably make a list of 20 scout team defensive linemen who’d be All-Pros if you watch just practice film. Then, when they get called up to the show, they can’t do anything. I’m not saying Mahomes would be a bust, just trying to provide context to that Kelce comment.

I often hear “Mahomes can provide a spark.” What does that mean? The team isn’t losing because of lack of effort. Does it mean that Mahomes can run out of the pocket and throw the ball 40 yards downfield? That’s not an offense, especially in a West Coast system. That is a novelty and it eventually wears down.

While the Maple Leafs are coming off a tremendous 41-save shutout by goaltender Curtis McElhinney, the Flyers are riding the strong play of veteran netminder Brian Elliott, who won all three games on their trek to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

Elliott stopped 103 of 108 shots in the three games, posting a 1.66 goals-against average to earn the NHL’s Third Star of the Week honors.

With Matthews out of the lineup, Toronto coach Mike Babcock moved winger William Nylander to center, where he played between wingers Zach Hyman and Connor Brown. The trio had not played together since the forwards were all with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.mariners_774

Perreault scores 2, Jets end skid with 5-1 win over Canucks

The Jets capitalized on their next power play when, 37 seconds after Nic Dowd went off for hooking, Tyler Myers’ blast produced a long rebound to Ehlers at the top of the circle that made it 3-1 at 14:09.

Thompson has missed a career-high 19 games. Last season, his franchise-record streak of 447 consecutive games played was snapped in April.

“We’ve got to figure it out,” Thompson said. “I don’t care if I don’t play, that’s fine, as long as we’re winning. I’m going to cheer my teammates on. If I play two minutes, three minutes, 20 minutes, it don’t matter to me. As long as we win.”

As the NFL playoff picture comes into focus, several Week 13 matchups offer teams opportunities to challenge for division leads and strengthen their cases for wild-card berths.

Panthers-Saints is the marquee divisional game this weekend. Both NFC South teams are 8-3, but the Saints hold the tiebreaker thanks to their win at Carolina in Week 3. Other exciting matchups include Vikings-Falcons, Rams-Cardinals and Patriots-Bills.

The Eagles’ Carson Wentz and the Seahawks’ Russell Wilson will square off on “Sunday Night Football” in one of the best matchups of the Week 13 slate. The other prime-time games are Redskins-Cowboys on Thursday and Steelers-Bengals on Monday.

The ending did little to ruin Jacksonville’s celebration, which had a lot to do with Bortles and the league’s top-ranked defense.royals_040

Tomas Hertl, Joe Pavelski, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Melker Karlsson scored the other goals for San Jose.

The Senators took more than 12 minutes to get a shot on goal and were thoroughly outplayed during their 11th loss in 12 games. After showing some grit in an overtime loss at Los Angeles on Thursday, Ottawa reverted back to its poor form in back-to-back shutout losses against Winnipeg and Anaheim.

Knicks: C Enes Kanter injured his hip late in the game, but said he will be fine to play on Sunday . C Joakim Noah, who spent the first nine seasons of his career in Chicago, was inactive even though he is not injured. Noah has been inactive or has not played in four of the last five games. … G Tim Hardaway Jr. (stress injury, lower left leg) remains in a walking boot. “We’re going to reevaluate in two weeks,” GM Scott Perry said. “I’m optimistic that we’re doing all the right things and eventually he’s going to be OK.”

Watt, a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year who was injured earlier this season, raised more than $37 million in Hurricane Harvey relief aid and “served as a beacon for what an athlete can do with their platform beyond sports.” SI said in its announcement.

Said Watt: “All I did was give people a way to help. … If I’m going to get an award, I feel like over 200,000 other people should too.”

Altuve, the Astros second baseman and 2017 AL MVP, “is an inspirational story about a consistently underestimated player who rose to the top of his sport,” SI writes. The three-time batting champion was a key part of the team that brought Houston its first World Series title but is recognized for giving back and inspiring a community when it needed it most.

It inspired Zimmer to toss up a quick challenge flag, assuming he had an easy win.

As the Steelers’ extremely consistent defense continued to play well last Thursday, the offense had a breakout day. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 299 yards and four touchdowns with 144 of those yards and three of those touchdowns going to Antonio Brown.

represents a growing number of Haitian American players the NFL that are not only making a positive impact the U.S.But at the end of the day, is anybody missing the old Chicago Blackhawks’ Stadium?he was flunking them all.But for all the reasonable explanations, what Tech fans care most about is the Hokies are just 12 against Power 5 teams the past three seasons, and Thursday’s home loss to Miami might have been the most listless performance Beamer’s squad has had a while.Ozhaino Albies, 2B 3.

Stanton was already filling in for Carson Palmer, who broke his arm against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Saturday that Stanton’s sprained knee could cost him a game or two. Mortensen also noted that Gabbert would start against Houston if Stanton couldn’t suit up. Stanton practiced with the team on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday but on a limited basis.

Arians said on Wednesday that he would name the starting quarterback on Friday. Gabbert took the most reps with first team on Wednesday, but Stanton made more progress than expected, according to Arians.

Fiedorowicz had a career , but Griffin also had a solid a much smaller role.It says a lot about Perez, said Cody , who saved three of ‘s four wins the ALCS and struck out seven of the 16 batters he faced, including two of four the clincher. He posted 16 tackles with two sacks, four stops for loss and a blocked kick.Liriano: November 2006 surgery; three-year, $39 million contract with Pirates December 2014.He became a free agent October when he refused outright assignment to the minors.orioles_021

Tarik Cohen’s winding 61-yard punt return TD shows why the Bears RB’s nickname is ‘The Human Joystick’

Tarik Cohen had a punt return for a touchdown that had shades of great return men Dante Hall and Devin Hester.

For the Chargers, this is the first Thanksgiving game since 1969. The 48-year gap between appearances on Turkey Day is the longest of any team and probably won’t ever be topped now that there are three games, although the Rams haven’t played one since 1975.

The Cowboys’ tight end has been around since 2003 and can notch another accomplishment if he gets just 26 yards receiving Thursday. That would put him at 835 career yards on Thanksgiving, ahead of Herman Moore for the most all-time on the holiday.

It included a 28-yard reception down the left sideline over Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward, who has been one of the best players at his position during the 2017 season.

He finished with four receptions for 85 yards, something only one other receiver had done against the Chargers this year:

The only wide receiver with more than 85 receiving yards against the Chargers this year was Odell Beckham. Josh Gordon hit that today after not playing football for three years.

It ultimately won’t matter much in 2017 if Gordon gives the Browns offense a boost — the team is already well out of contention — but it’s a great help for DeShone Kizer, who desperately needs it, and a good sign for the future of the franchise if Gordon can return to form.

Young blacks overwhelmingly support protests during national anthem, study shows

It’s no secret that how Americans feel about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem breaks sharply along racial lines, but a recent study shows that division might be even greater than many expect.

“Our findings point to a realistic yet potentially disturbing racial schism that exists in America today regarding anthem protests,” Piquero said in a UT-Dallas release.

Among the study’s other findings, both black and white respondents were less supportive of sitting during the anthem as a form of protest, with 73 percent of blacks and 22 percent of whites agreeing it is appropriate.

The study also found support for players who raise fists in the air mirrors the support for kneeling, with 88 percent of blacks supporting the raised fist, vs. 32 percent of whites.

Bennett was released by the Packers last week, and one story suggested it was because he failed to report a medical condition. In what is an entirely “he said, he said” situation, Bennett said that he was told he could play by the team doctor but he didn’t think he could. The Packers then released him and Bennett went off on them on Instagram.

Bennett then signed with the Patriots and caught three passes in New England’s 41-16 win over the Broncos. Clinton-Dix took note of that.

“For a guy that came in, of his caliber, his leadership quote-unquote, I expected more from him,” Clinton-Dix said. “I held him to a higher standard, me personally. But he handled it the way he wanted to handle it.”nike_bears-243
